RP economy recovers MANILA (AFP): The Philippine economy has shown strong signs of recovery but faces new threats from inflation and a growing trade gap, a report submitted to an Asian Development Bank (ADB) conference here yesterday said. The report, by the semi-official Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) forecasts gross national product (GNP) growth of 5.3 percent and gross domestic product (GDP) growth of about five percent in 1994 with higher growth in 1995.

After I talked to the owner in English (he has a Singaporean accent and a Thai sounding name) I felt confident and went to visit his clinic. At the clinic he gave me an article that was published in this paper in April. His Javanese wife, who happened to be his first patient, helps him manage the clinic. I was really impressed by this noble enterprise.

I sent my written complaints on April 18, June 7, and Aug. 9. I have a problem with the "careless current meter recordings," done by PLN staff. On my July bill the electricity usage was recorded at 3180, while in fact our meter showed 2445. I had to pay Rp 45,095, a considerable increase in my electricity bill.

Can't they queue? I have been living in Indonesia for three years. I want to talk about my experience in a Hero supermarket, about four weeks ago. I went to Hero, with my wife and my three-year old son, to buy some daily commodities. After I found what I needed, I went to the cashier. Japan's car makers plan to boost overseas production TOKYO (Reuter): Japanese car makers want to boost car production in other Asian countries to meet rising demand and improve prices, industry sources said yesterday. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. will build a car plant in Rojana Industrial Park, north of the Thai capital Bangkok, to produce an 60,000 cars a year, a spokesman for the company said. The firm plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony later this month.

Two candidates running for chief justice post JAKARTA (JP): Chief Justice Purwoto Suhadi Gandasubrata says that the two candidates nominated by the House of Representatives to replace him have an equal chance of taking the post. Purwoto however declined to state his preference between M. Djaelani and Soerjono, both senior justices on the Supreme Court. "Believe me, they both have an equal chance to be the next Chief Justice," Purwoto told reporters on Saturday about his possible successor.

Disputed presidential decree hearing delayed JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto's representative failed to show up at the State Administrative Court to examine a disputed presidential decree, forcing the court to adjourn the session until Oct. 31. The court was scheduled to examine seven non-governmental organizations' law suit seeking the abolition of a presidential decree allowing appropriation of reforestation funds for the state-owned aircraft industry (IPTN).

Defense of Yorrys said groundless JAKARTA (JP): Prosecutor Sukardi asked the West Jakarta District Court judge yesterday to ignore the defense statement of Tommy Sihotang, the lawyer hired by Yorrys Raweyai and the three others on trial for gambling, saying that it was completely groundless. "Your Honor, the defense's statement claiming that my indictment is inaccurate is an age-old cliche typically employed to counter a prosecutor's statement," Sukardi said.
