Military explains George's case
SALATIGA, Central Java: The military said the authorities are now questioning scholar George Aditjondro about the background of critical remarks he made during a seminar at the Islam Indonesia University in Yogyakarta last August.
Maj. Gen. Soeyono, chief of the Diponegoro Military Command, said it is not the intention of the authorities to silence scholars from addressing issues of concern to them.
"Sure they can be vocal, as long as they are correct the military will support them," Soeyono said.
George, a staff lecturer at the Satya Wacana Christian University here, visited the Yogyakarta police last Saturday in response to their summons. The case continues. (har/emb)
