KL, S'pore set to battle island case KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia plans to resolve a dispute with Singapore over a tiny island before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, officials said yesterday. "We are to meet in mid-December to work out the procedure to submit the case before the international court," said Ahmad Kamil Jaafar, the secretary-general of Malaysia's foreign ministry.

Pakistanis jailed in Medan MEDAN, North Sumatra: Three Pakistanis have been sentenced to nine months imprisonment by the local district court for stealing a total of Rp 3.1 million from several people, the Antara news agency reported. The three men were identified as Jehangir Khan, Ahmed Abid Khan and Khalid Munir Hamman, all in their 20s. Their victims were shopkeepers. According to the court record, the three men pretended to shop and would hand over a Rp 50,000 note in payment.

Not professional From Kompas I have complained to the state electricity company (PLN) three times during my six-month stay in Bekasi, West Java. I sent my written complaints on April 18, June 7, and Aug. 9. I have a problem with the "careless current meter recordings," done by PLN staff. On my July bill the electricity usage was recorded at 3180, while in fact our meter showed 2445. I had to pay Rp 45,095, a considerable increase in my electricity bill.

Stock Exchange JAKARTA (JP): The price of Indosat's shares on the Jakarta Stock Exchange (JSX) gained an even stronger footing yesterday in heavy trading, rising by another five percent to close at Rp 8,950 (US$4.10), slightly higher than the closing price on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday. The price of Indosat shares closed Wednesday on the NYSE at $39 per ADS -- representing 10 ordinary shares -- up from $37.12 on Tuesday.

Top school rejects five-day week YOGYAKARTA: Taman Siswa, one of Indonesia's oldest education institutions, has rejected the government's five day school week scheme now being given a trial run at some schools. Taman Siswa deputy chief Boerhanoeddin Loebis said that the school curriculum in Indonesia is heavier compared to other countries, like Australia, and it is impossible to cram it all into five days. The curriculum is currently spread over six days.

Some time ago a new route was tried which resulted in traffic chaos. One day no buses were available at the Bogor bus terminal, Baranangsiang. I learn, later, the buses had been moved to a new place. Yet no announcement was made of this change. A large number of commuters were disappointed.

But the weekend turned sour at 4 p.m. on Sunday when our 5- year old son screamed out in pain while swimming in the hotel's pool. He had cut his knee on the bottom of the pool. Blood streamed out of the wound. Other guests commented that many children had been hurt in the same place before.

Bachtiar Moerad said qualified veterinarians are needed to run some of the clinics and slaughterhouses owned by the government. Students brawl From Pelita It was distressing to read news reports in the papers on Oct. 17, about the students brawl involving a group of ISTN and IISIP students. This incident resulted in ten people injured, seven cars damaged and a further six people detained. It is disheartening because they are university students who will become intellectuals and may be responsible for the nation's future one day. In fact, they should set a good example to younger students still in high school.

Pilgrims' hospital to be inaugurated President Soeharto is scheduled to inaugurate a haj pilgrim hospital in Pondok Gede, East Jakarta, next month. The Antara news agency reported that the construction of the hospital, which will be able to accommodate around 4,000 pilgrims from Jakarta, was completed on Sept. 15. Chief of the City Health Office Soeharto said that all of Jakarta's Moslems who intend to perform the Haj pilgrimage will be required to undergo a medical check-up at the new hospital.

Three dead in chain accident SEMARANG: Three people were killed and 13 others injured in a three-way accident involving a tanker truck, a minibus and a jeep on Tanah Putih highway in south Semarang. The accident occurred on Wednesday night when the tanker truck, loaded with 16,000 liters of fuel oil, lost control on a rise in the road. The tanker rolled back at a fast speed and backed into the minibus and the jeep behind it.

Ltd. said yesterday it had set up a joint venture in Indonesia with another Japanese firm and local concerns to produce and sell printed circuit boards. The joint venture, located in suburban Jakarta, will be capitalized at US$1.5 million and is expected to commence production in January next year. The venture will be controlled 20 percent by Kyosha, 39.2 percent by Miyoshi Electronic Corp.

Haze disrupts flight services JAMBI, Jambi: Thick haze once again blankets the city, forcing the state carrier Merpati Nusantara Airlines to cancel its flight services between the city and Jakarta. Head of the local Merpati operation, Max Mandagi, said on Thursday that the airline has stopped its twice daily flights to Jakarta since Tuesday because the haze has cut visibility to 1,000 meters which makes it impossible for Fokker 28 planes to land and take off, the Antara news agency reported.
