Poverty funds embezzled

BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: Wonosobo district police have arrested a village chief suspected of embezzling government funds earmarked for the development of impoverished villages.

Chairman of the local planning board Dachlan Ali said yesterday that the suspect was under investigation and would be brought to trial.

He declined to name the suspect or the amount of money in question.

In September, three village heads in West Lampung were dismissed after they were found guilty of embezzling government assistance funds, Antara.

The government provides Rp 20 million to poor villages through Inpres, the presidential instruction program, and reviews results every year. (rms)
