KL blames French for radar fire
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's transport minister yesterday
rejected opposition taunts of incompetence and blamed a French
supplier for a fire that knocked out a radar at Subang
International Airport in August.
"The radar was supplied, installed and maintained by the
French, who are world leaders as radar manufacturers. No
Malaysians were involved," the minister, Ling Liong Sik, told
reporters.
The blaze on Aug. 13 damaged the airport's 16.5-million-
ringgit ($6.4-million) approach radar, supplied by Thomson-CSF of
France in December 1992.
Flight schedules were plunged into chaos and a top aviation
official was later removed.
