City to hold culture expo
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will hold a seven-day culture preservation exhibition at the Ancol art center starting today.
H. Dirman Surachmat, head of the city's museum and historical affairs office, said that the exhibition is intended to help save the old cultural values, which are being encroached upon by development.
"The preservation of old cultural values is vital because the achievements of this era cannot be separated from our age-old cultures," he said.
Dirman said that the exhibition, which is held in conjunction with the commemoration of the 66th anniversary of Youth Pledge Day, will display various collections owned by the city's museums, ranging from historical collections of Sunda Kelapa, photographs on heroism taken during the Indonesian struggle between 1945 and 1947, wayang, to various types of the country's textile designs.
He said that the number of museums under the supervision of his office total seven, including Museum Sejarah, Museum Wayang, Museum Juang and Museum Tekstil.
The seven museums are visited by an average of 6,500 people per month, of which 4,300 visit Museum Sejarah. (hhr)
