More intellectuals banned in Yogya

YOGYAKARTA: Banning of art performances in this "intellectual town" continues. On Saturday, it was poet Darmanto Jatman and Linus Suryadi's turn to stay off the stage.

The authorities banned Darmanto and Linus from reading their poems, Golf for the People and Maria of Magdalene during an art show at Taman Budaya Yogyakarta.

Linus said he was told that Darmanto's poem was banned on the grounds that the poem might further incite people's opposition to the ongoing development of a golf course in Sleman area which had drawn protests by the local residents.

He declined to theorize why the authorities banned his poem, Antara reported.

In August authorities banned the poet and playwright from reading his poems at the same location. (09)
