As a member of the Pantai Indah Kapuk Golf Club (Golf PIK),
North Jakarta, I deeply deplore the incident in which a guest
(not a club member) brutalized a club member. The victim suffered
serious injuries and was taken to the nearest hospital for
medical treatment.

My colleague and I were playing at Golf PIK, where the
incident took place on Saturday, Oct. 22, 1994, at about 3.30 pm.
I was told the perpetrator was arrogant enough to refer to
himself as a high ranking official. At the time, the perpetrator
was accompanying a young entrepreneur who also joined in
brutalizing the victim by hitting him with a golf stick and
stepping on him.

It all began when the young entrepreneur violated a rule of
the game twice. When the member of the club politely reminded him
of the mistakes, the young man and his friend were angry and
rudely shouted at him. Then a fist fight ensued. The poor club
member, overwhelmed by his opponents, was so seriously injured
that stitches had to be administered.

Another high ranking official (a minister) was at the club and
asked the young executive not to take the law into his own hands.

I wondered why no security guards were present at the site. I
suggest Golf PIK be more careful selecting members to the club to
avoid a recurrence of this disgusting incident.
