Suspected killer shot by police

City police shot to death a suspected murderer during an on- the-spot investigation of his case in Cilincing, North Jakarta.

Police said that Irvani, 22, who was strongly believed to have stabbed a 23-year-old man to death on Saturday, tried to escape while he was being accompanied by police detectives to show the hiding place of his two other friends involved in the killing.

According to police officers, Irvani killed Amin Hakiki with a pocket knife in a small alley in Cakung Barat after the latter refused to give him money to buy some beer.

Amin was on the way home from his girlfriend's house on Saturday evening when Irvani and his four friends committed the extortion.

Irvani and two of his friends were arrested several hours after the killing. After bouts of questioning, police invited Irvani to accompany them to show his two other accomplices' houses. (bsr)
