East Timor rebel surrenders
DILI, East Timor: One more separatist rebel surrendered to the military last week.
Col. Kiki Syahnakri, the East Timor Military Command, said Saturday that 32-year-old Umberto da Cruz had arrived at an Indonesian military base in Boboto village in Lautem on Friday morning.
"He said they (Fretilin rebels) are short of ammunition and logistics," Kiki said, referring to an estimated 188 rebels now still at large.
Meanwhile, Maj. Ladean Simbolon, the spokesman of the East Timorese military command, called on remnants of the Fretilin rebels to follow da Cruz and help develop the province. (yac/09)
