Lawmen probe smuggled goods

CIREBON, West Java: The local prosecutors' office is investigating smuggled goods worth Rp 3 billion (US$1.4 million) at the local seaport.

Antara, quoting sources at the office, reported yesterday that investigators were cross-checking information on how the goods were brought into the port illegally from Batam.

Customs and excise officials said the goods, mostly machinery, were seized because they were not accompanied by the necessary documents.

They said it would take them three days to open the containers and list the contents. They also said they had the names of the recipients of the goods and that they lived in this town. (pan)
