BTN to issue $152.9m five-year bonds JAKARTA (JP): State-owned Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN) will issue five-year bonds next month to raise up to Rp 350 billion (US$152.9 million) from the public to help finance its housing loans, the bank's president said yesterday. "Actually the value of the bonds, called BTN Bonds VI, is Rp 250 billion and we will increase the size by another Rp 100 billion if the offering is oversubscribed," Widigdo Sukarman said in a public presentation at the BTN Tower here.

PPD employees to be rehabilitated JAKARTA (JP): Six employees at the state-owned public transportation firm PPD will receive back pay dating to October 1991. The Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH) said in a statement yesterday that Paiman, Tarmid Suharto, Usman, Suryadi, Mardjan Gunadi and Sukirman will receive back salaries of Rp 1 million (US$445) each from the company. PPD is also expected to rehabilitate their names and pay the Rp 338,650 in court expenses.

Three awarded title of National Hero JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto conferred the title of National Hero on three men yesterday: Nuku Muhammad Amiruddin Kaicil Paparangan, Tuanku Tambusai and Syekh Yusuf Tajul Khalwati. Soeharto also conferred awards of meritorious service on 50 deceased people, all of whom were represented by either their widows or heirs. My father's citizenship certificate (a VI B form) is not registered at the state court. And the result is that I was denied a passport. Soiled banknotes From Kompas I cannot help wondering why banknotes (rupiah) get soiled and damaged so easily. The banknotes I am referring to are Rp 100, Rp 500, Rp 1,000, Rp 5,000, and Rp 10,000. To hold soiled and torn banknotes is inconvenient and even disgusting. What can we do to make the banknotes last longer? It is a small matter indeed but if you deal with them every day you may become irritated.

Boram Bank, which has a 70 percent stake in Boram Risjad, is one of Korea's major banks with total assets of US$18.5 billion as of June.
