Ship accident holds up port

SERANG, West Java: Activities at the Merak port were held up
after a ferry crashed into the gangway at Quay 1 on Monday.

The ferry, Nusa Bahagia, was towed out of the quay to be
repaired, according to Antara.

The accident left the Merak port with only one quay in
operation. Long queues of cars, trucks and buses quickly
developed as they waited for their turn to board a ferry.

Between 17,000 to 20,000 passengers arrive in Merak each day
by sea, while passengers departing for Sumatra from the port
number between 10,000 to 16,000 per day.

Fourteen ferries on the route operate 40 trips around the
clock with a maximum capacity of 900 passengers and 90 vehicles
each. (anr)
