1,700 netted in routine operation

JAKARTA (JP): More than 1,700 people were apprehended last
month during a routine operation, a city official said Saturday.

Most of the 1,762 people apprehended by the security and order
office were beggars and homeless people. A total of 131
prostitutes and 13 transvestites were among those rounded up. The
others were three-in-one kids and street vendors.

Toha Reno, official of the security and order office, said
over the weekend that the operation was part of the national
discipline drive.

"A total of 512 people are now in a special home managed by
the city social office," Toha said.

He said 345 people were sent back to their families, 497
joined social organizations, 45 were put in Mekar Jaya prostitute
rehabilitation center, 13 sent to a training center for
transvestites and 350 were sent back to their original provinces.

"A total of 200 were sent back to West Java and 150 to Central
Java," Toha said. (yns)
