AdAsia '95 congress to take place at Bali tourist resort

DENPASAR, Bali (JP): More than 1,000 people will take part in
the AdAsia '95 congress opening at Bali International Conference
Center in the Nusa Dua resort tomorrow.

The participants include 150 journalists from all over the
world.

Presented under the theme Uptrend in Asia, the 19th Asian
Advertising Congress will be opened by President Soeharto and
will continue through Nov. 9.

"It was with confidence that Uptrend in Asia was chosen to be
the theme. For a global economic community that is losing faith
in the present system, which creates recession after recession,
an upturn in economic activity is the balm that has been long
awaited, said Raymond Toruan, general manager of The Jakarta Post
who is also committee president of the convention.

"Asia and the Pacific is providing the economic upturn, the
Uptrend. AdAsia '95 will provide the forum to discuss the role of
the advertising business in this new phenomenon and present the
message to the world," he added.

The first day of the congress will open with a keynote speech
from Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade Hartarto. It
will be followed by a panel discussion by Dorodjatun Kuntjoro
Jakti, University of Indonesia's dean of the School of Economics,
and Umar Kayam, a professor of Gadjah Mada University's School of
Literature, and Malaysian Minister of Entrepreneurship Mustafa
Mohamad.

The second day will discuss social marketing in Asia with
speakers that include Indonesia's Minister of Population Haryono
Suyono and David Innes, executive director of New Zealand
Advertising Agencies Association.

The congress will also discuss strategic issues such as the
growth triangles in several Asian regions, including the Hong
Kong-Southern China-Taipei Triangle, to be led by Yun-Wing Sung
from Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Singapore-Johor-
Riau Triangle which will be presented by Johor Governor Tuan Haji
Dato' Abdul Ghani Othman.

Other topics to be discussed include Promoting Asian
Advertising, Asian Advertising into the New Millennium, Eco-
Friendly Product/Process and Human Resources Development.

"The program committee has also prepared a schedule of events
for the congress that will feature Indonesian arts and culture,"
said Henry Saputra, secretary-general of the organizing
committee. (aks)
