Police release student rioters
DILI, East Timor: Police have reportedly released 23 of the
262 students and youths that were arrested during a riot here
last month.
Police chief Col. Andreas Sugianto told The Jakarta Post on
Wednesday that some of the detained youths have been returned to
their families. He did not specify how many people were released,
but legislator Manuel Carrascalao said he had met with the 23
newly-freed youths.
"They told me they were beaten...by the police," Carrascalao
said.
Andreas did not say whether the investigation was completed or
when the police would submit their dossiers on the accused
rioters to court officials. (yac/swe)
