Teams ready for Johnie Walker Cup
JAKARTA (JP): Representative teams from around the Far East
are poised for a challenging two days of golf at the Johnie
Walker amateur inter-club championship on Cheju Island, South
Korea, starting Sunday.
The Chungmun Beach golf course will test the skills of a
record number of teams representing 16 countries. The event,
initiated in 1991, pits amateur golfers with handicaps from 0 to
24.
Teams from China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, South
Korea, Macao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand will be out in force on the Chungmun
course, along with newcomers from Japan and Guam/Saipan.
The championship uses a 36-hole strokeplay format, with
fourteen teams of three players competing in each handicap class.
Classes are split into three categories. Class A groups
golfers with handicaps between 0 to nine, class B 10 to 16 and
class C 17 to 24. The winner will be the team with the lowest net
aggregate scores after 36 holes.
The championship has toured Thailand, the Philippines and
Indonesia since 1991 before moving to South Korea. Traditionally,
the championship would be followed by a skin game with a number
of prominent players taking part. (amd)
