Kawashima beats Aruan in 3rd

TOKYO (Reuter): Japan's Hiroshi Kawashima retained his World
Boxing Council (WBC) super-flyweight title when the referee
stopped the fight against Indonesia's Boy Aruan in the third
round.

Filipino referee Carlos Padilla stopped the fight one minute
57 seconds into the round, after Kawashima knocked down the
Indonesian for the second time.

It was Kawashima's fourth successful defense of the title he
wrested from Jose Luis Bueno of Mexico in May, 1994, and the
third this year. He outpointed Mexico's Jose Luis Bueno in
January and Lee Seung-koo of South Korea in May.

Kawashima raised his record to 18 wins, including 13
knockouts, against two defeats and one draw. Aruan dropped to 26-
4-1 with six knock-outs.
