Transvestites hold Youth Pledge Day

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Hundreds of transvestites from North Sumatra, Jakarta and Malaysia staged a musical show before an audience of about 2,000 on Monday.

The show, held at a Danau Toba hotel, featured singing, dancing and a fashion show to mark Youth Pledge Day, which fell on Oct. 28.

Antara reported that spectators clapped to a Madonna-like singer and held their breath during the performance of a snake dancer.

The event capped the finals of a volley ball tournament among North Sumatran transvestites.

"They have proved their expertise in the performing arts and sports," said a legal advisor to the transvestites, Zulhifzi Lubis. (anr)
