Supermarkets should learn an important lesson from the Nov. 3 incident Purwarkarta, West Java, in which a big group of people smashed a number of shops, damaged seven cars and two motorcycles and burned two warehouses. This incident occurred after a student was accused of stealing a bar of chocolate in the Nusantara supermarket.
As is often the case, the security personnel of a supermarket accused a shopper of shoplifting without making careful inquiries beforehand. So the alleged culprit became overwhelmed with shame, while in fact the customer was innocent.
What surprises me is that very often the security staff of the supermarkets seize alleged shoplifters and punish them in the hope that they will be entitled to some incentive or prize from the management. They should know that even a notorious robber has to be thoroughly investigated according to lawful procedures.
