Renault in Malaysia
Renault in Malaysia PARIS (AFP): Renault has signed an agreement with Malaysian company Inokom for the production in Malaysia of a commercial vehicle based on the Traffic van, Renault said yesterday. The agreement, which was signed on Friday, allows Inokom a license under royalty to manufacture variations of the vehicle powered by petrol or diesel engines. Inokom is to produce 5,000 vehicles per year. Some of the parts are to be manufactured locally and some are to be provided by Renault.

Medco acquires Stanvac JAKARTA (JP): Publicly-listed PT Medco Energy Corporation has acquired all the stocks of PT Stanvac Indonesia, the oldest oil company in the country, Medco's finance director Sugiharto told The Jakarta Post yesterday. Pizza Hut burgled JAKARTA (JP): Burglars broke into the Pizza Hut fast food outlet in the International Trade Center in Roxy Mas, West Jakarta, on Monday, making off with Rp 10 million in cash. Police said that more than one thief entered the restaurant through the front door and took Rp 10 million (US$4,450) in cash from the safe. The theft was reportedly discovered by employees who came in to work at about 7:30 yesterday morning. They reported the case to the Gambir police.

Oki to set up RI unit TOKYO (Reuter): Oki Electric Cable Co. Ltd. said it will set up an Indonesian unit in March 1996 to produce telephone cables, cords for car mobile phones, and connectors. The new company, PT Oki Electric Cable Batam, will be capitalized at US$6 million. It will be owned 90 percent by Oki Electric Industry Co. Ltd. and 10 percent by Oki Electric Cable (Asia) Pte Ltd, which is OEC's Southeast Asian sales unit. Oki Electric Industry owns 33.5 percent of OEC.

Constraints include less proficiency in management, a shortage of funds and a general lack of national pride. The latest case is the refusal of PT Merpati Nusantara to lease the CN 235-200 aircraft, because high operating costs prevent it from being commercially profitable. Dutch man dead in hotel JAKARTA (JP): A 64-year-old Dutch man died in an East Jakarta hotel room on Sunday, police said yesterday. John Japper died on Sunday night of a heart attack in room number 101 of a hotel on Jl. Jatinegara Barat, police sources said. A female Indonesian companion was reportedly in the hotel with the Dutch man at the time of his death. The officer said that Japper had come to Indonesia with his sister and brother-in-law to visit relatives in Maluku.

Salary raise insulting From Sinar I have been a civil servant for four years and was in the IIa category. I was just promoted to the IIb, which should have happened last April. I was delighted with the promotion and expected to be equally pleased with the raise I was to receive. The promotion decree was issued in June 1995 and I collected it after paying a "fee" of Rp 15,000, which I had to borrow from a friend. I expected to pay him back from the increase in my salary.

Earthquake felt in Bengkulu BENGKULU, Bengkulu: A powerful earthquake shook two regencies in the Bengkulu province on Sunday shortly before midnight, but there were no reports of casualties. The local Meteorology and Geophysics agency said the tremor measured 6.3 on the Richter scale and the epicenter was about 15 kilometers east of the Enggano island off Sumatra. The tremor was felt in Bengkulu and Rejang Lebong regencies. (emb)
