10 years jail sought in police murder case

JAKARTA (JP): A public prosecutor demanded yesterday that two
defendants on trial for attacking police officers be sentenced to
10 years imprisonment.

One of the two officers died in the attack, which took place
at Blok M shopping area on March 6.

"I demand that the court sentence Reza Lawalata and Idris
Tuarita to 10 years in jail each for assaulting Lt. Budi Prasetyo
and Capt. Arman Depari," prosecutor Tuty L.Siahaan told South
Jakarta District Court.

The defendants have been proven guilty, she claimed in the
court presided over by Judge Syamsuddin.

She said witnesses and evidence clearly proved that both Reza
and Idris hit and kicked the police officers.

Budi was killed in the attack but the defendants are not on
trial for his death, which was blamed on two others, Mario and
Franky, who died after being shot by police.

Prosecutor Tuty said the defendants had violated article 170
of the Criminal Code by causing public unrest, disturbing public
order and causing injury to others. "The panel of judges should
take these factors into consideration," she said.

A group of street hoodlums attacked Budi and Arman at night,
as the two police officers were parking their car in the Blok M
shopping complex.

Reza Lawalata, Idris Tuarita, Amirsan Liskaloho, Zulkifli
Nahumaruri, Frenky Jufrimaudu, Mario Lesbanu, Stevanus Van
Capele, Robinson Timisela and Jimiko Danyanto were all suspected
of having taken part in the attack.

Last week, a prosecutor demanded the same court to sentence
two other defendants to five years in prison each.

The killing of Budi sparked a massive operation against street
hoodlums in the city and surrounding areas like Bogor, Tangerang
and Bekasi.

Police and military officers arrested more than 15,000 people
in the operation, of which some 700 were put in special courses
at city police and military headquarters, or sent to Islamic
boarding school. Dozens were taken to court but most of them were
eventually released. (29)
