Law obedience

Law obedience

It was quite interesting to read your editorial Respecting the law (The Jakarta Post, Oct. 25, 1995). Unfortunately, to my disappointment, this law disobedience is not only conducted by the citizens but is also noticed in many government activities. Just to mention one example: How the rule of an organization like Korpri (civil servants corps) can override Government Regulation No 20/1976.

Civil servants, it is said, are endowed with the right to choose freely one of the three contestants. In practice, all civil servants, who are obliged to be Korpri members, have only one choice -- a definite choice for the benefit of the government. This practice has been going on for years and it is not only violating Government Regulation No 20/1976 but most importantly it violates the 1945 Constitution.

I have been wondering when this disobedience will end. All of us, I believe, long for the rule of law to be reflected in everyday life.
