PowerGen to enter RI LONDON (Reuter): British electricity generator PowerGen Plc [PWG.L] said on Thursday it agreed to take significant stakes in two independent power projects planned in Indonesia and Thailand. The projects, which will cost 1.27 billion pounds ($2.1 billion), will have a total generating capacity of 1,850 megawatts. PowerGen said the new projects would boost its international capacity by 34 percent.

Dywidag wins Asian deals MUNICH, Germany (Reuter): German construction group Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG said yesterday it won two Asian contracts with a total value of 280 million marks (US$165.7 million). A 200 million mark contract called for the company, which is known as Dywidag, to build a six-lane, 6.8-km highway in the Thai capital of Bankok. Under an 80 million mark deal, Dywidag would build a cement plant in Indonesia.

Mitsubishi's Asian wagon TOKYO (AFP): Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said yesterday it would produce and sell a family wagon model in Taiwan towards the end of this year, with successive launches in Indonesia and the Philippines. The combined annual output is planned at 70,000 units in the three countries, with an investment of 17 billion yen (148 million dollars), the Japanese car maker said. The "dynamic family wagon" will be suitable for individual and light commercial use, the company said.

The company said that under the contract signed yesterday, Lyonnaise would lead the team to manage the new plant. The consortium would invest about US$85 million to build the water treatment plant, which is due to be completed in the year 2000, the company said.

The company said yesterday that the net profit plunge resulted from "price competition" during the three-month period. Asahimas' net sales dropped by 15.3 percent to Rp 82.4 billion during the first quarter, down from Rp 97.3 billion in the same period of 1996.
