Malaysian climbers conquer Everest

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): Two Malaysian climbers planted their nation's flag at the summit of Mount Everest yesterday, an act televised live back in Malaysia.

The two climbers, M. Magendran and N. Mohandas, were part of a national team that has been on the world's tallest mountain since March 1 preparing for the ascent.

New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary, who made the first ascent of the 8,848-meter mountain with Tenzing Norgay of Nepal in 1953, once said he climbed Everest because it was there.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad kicked off the campaign last year with the slogan, Malaysia Boleh or Malaysia can.
