Rallies encourage consumerism

SEMARANG: The Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) and Golkar vie with one another for support in a consumptive way.

PDI has tried to win people's support through the stomach. In a glad-handing campaign at Pedurungan Tengah soccer field Monday, party activists served mung bean porridge to local people.

While Golkar, which has the support of the republic's large- scale entrepreneurs, handed out door-price tickets in nine subdistricts in Kudus to attract people.

"Those lucky enough got door-price tickets for color TVs and motorcycles," said Kudus Golkar chairman Sigim Machmud. (38/pan)
