It's free on Jan. 3 JAKARTA: The Ministry of Religious Affairs, in connection with its 50th anniversary, is waiving the Rp 10,000 fee it charges for performing Moslem wedding rituals for one day only. The offer is valid only on Jan. 3 at all religious affairs offices around the country, said Nazar Muhdi, the ministry's chief spokesman. Also waived for a day is the Rp 10,000 fee the office charges married couples for reconciliation services, Antara reported. (emb)

Number of crimes declines slightly this year: Police JAKARTA (JP): Indonesia has been slightly safer this year compared to 1994, with the police reporting an overall decline in the crime rate, albeit only a slight one. National Police Chief Gen. Banurusman Astrosemitro told journalists yesterday that the number of crimes reported to the police this year dropped to 163,197 cases from 164,119 cases the previous year.

In July 1995 my house was burglarized but up until now the developer has not accounted for the incident. The burglars forced their way into the house through the window of the kitchen. Student brawl claims life PADANG, West Sumatra: A high school student was shot dead and three others injured when a police officer tried to break up a brawl between students from two high schools in Pariaman on Wednesday. Sumitomo buys Salim stake TOKYO (AFP): Major Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. said yesterday it would take a 10 percent stake in PT Sulfindo Adiusaha, a chemical unit in the Salim group, Indonesia's largest conglomerate. Sumitomo would buy an even combination of straight and convertible bonds, worth a total of US$50 million, which would be issued by Sulfindo Adiusaha next month, the company said in a statement.

300 conglomerates lead domestic market share JAKARTA (JP): The 300 largest conglomerates in the country continue to dominate local market share, making up 47.8 percent of the country's gross national product. In a report released yesterday, the Indonesian Business Data Center said that the combined turnovers of the 300 conglomerates increased by 15 percent last year to Rp 169.6 trillion (US$73.5 billion) from Rp 147.2 trillion in 1993.

Transmission lines built JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned electricity company PT PLN will build 200 kilometers of 500-kilovolt transmission lines from Paiton in East Java to Klaten in Central Java, the company's president, Djiteng Marsudi, said yesterday. "The transmission project, which will be financed by the World Bank, will raise the average power voltage at the 150-kilovolt transmission lines in Central Java from its present critically low level of 133 kilovolt," Djiteng said in Semarang.

Police still intervening in labor rows JAKARTA (JP): The Legal Aid Foundation (LBH) in Surabaya said that in 1995 the military in East Java continued to intervene in labor disputes and suppress labor movements in direct contravention of a government regulation. According to LBH, of the 135 labor strikes that occurred this year, police intervention occurred in 118 cases. The interventions, LBH claims, took various forms, from peaceful counseling to intimidation and the use of force.

We have every reason to be deeply concerned about this particular syndrome, because no cure has yet been found. That's why the government continues with its intensive anti-AIDS campaign throughout Indonesia. PT Jasa Marga expects profit of Rp 220b this year JAKARTA (JP): PT Jasa Marga, the state-owned toll-road developer and operator, will probably surpass its profit target of Rp 190 billion (US$83.15 million) to reach Rp 220 billion this year, the company's President Maryadi Darmokumoro said yesterday. "We're optimistic that a profit of Rp 220 billion from this year's revenues of Rp 509 billion can be realized," said Maryadi, who was speaking at a year-end meeting with journalists here.
