Chinese await naturalization
BANDUNG: Around 6,000 people of Chinese descent residing in the West Java province are currently being considered for Indonesian citizenship, an official said.
There are currently around 9,000 "stateless" Chinese in the province and about two thirds of them have applied for naturalization, Nadi Sastrakusumah, the official in charge of the project, told Antara.
Nadi said he did not foresee any problem in processing their applications, which should be completed by April.
However, he said that if their applications are approved, the provincial administration stands to lose about Rp 250 million ($110,600) a year from the special foreigner tax that it has been collecting. (31)
