Worker Union to hold carnival

JAKARTA (JP): To celebrate the 23rd anniversary of the All- Indonesia Workers Union (SPSI) in February, the union will hold a carnival in Jakarta involving some 3,000 people.

Hikayat Atika Karwa, chairman of the organizing committee for the celebration told The Jakarta Post yesterday that carnival participants will come from Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi and include workers from both the private and civil sectors.

"We want to show the people that SPSI belongs to both private and government employees," he said.

SPSI is the only workers' union acknowledged by the government. The Indonesian Prosperous Labor Union (SBSI), another union, is illegal.

Hikayat did not explain the relationship between SPSI and Civil Servants Corps (Korpri). Korpri, under the umbrella of the ruling group Golkar, is the sole organization for civil servants.

SPSI will also hold seminars, Hikayat said. He did not give a specific date for the carnival and seminars. (03)
