Basofi predicts more unrest

SURABAYA: East Java Governor Basofi Soedirman predicted more
unrest in the province next year as the 1997 general election
approaches.

Basofi said land disputes and labor problems were two major
problems besetting East Java throughout 1995, Antara reported.

The year-long conflict within the East Java chapter of the
Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) has also complicated security
matters in the province, he said.

Basofi once again offered his good offices to mediate the
dispute although he underlined that any settlement must be
mutually agreed upon by both camps contesting the right to
represent the party in the province. (imn)
