Understanding on rules of origin needed JAKARTA (JP): Businesses must have a sound understanding of the rules of origin stipulated in international trade because the adoption of such policies will be unavoidable in the future, a Ministry of Trade official says. Director for Foreign Trade Hatanto Reksodiputro said that each country or regional trade grouping has their own set of rules and that presently there is no general agreement between countries on rules of origin.

Police, squatters clash at dumpsite MANILA (Reuter): One man was killed yesterday and a Japanese cameraman seriously injured when squatters clashed with police trying to evict them from the Smokey Mountain garbage dump in Manila, hospital workers said. The man was killed after gunshots erupted as police moved in to evict the squatters, they said. A Manila radio station also said one person was killed, but the report could not be immediately confirmed.

Man beaten for stealing car JAKARTA (JP): A man was beaten by a mob for trying to steal a car in the parking lot of the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital yesterday. Tawu (35), also known as Oki, was caught by a security guard in the act of trying to break open the door of a jeep owned by a doctor, at noon. The doctor's car was parked in front of the Eijkman Molecular Biology Institute, in the hospital compound.

Before entering the hospital's premises, they charge a Rp 500 fee for parking, like almost every other place. No rabies case in Jakarta JAKARTA (JP): The City Health Office head, Dr. Aslan Lasman, said yesterday that there are no rabies patients in Jakarta. The statements were made to The Jakarta Post in reference to a preliminary report saying that more than 4,000 cases of rabies were detected in Jakarta over the last five years. Aslan said that more than 4,000 people had been bitten by rabies-carrying animals such as dogs, cats and monkeys.

S'pore-Riau ferry SINGAPORE (Reuter): Sembawang Maritime Ltd. said it has invested another Singapore $16 million to buy six high-speed ferries for its regional ferry operations. Of six vessels purchased, four have been delivered and another two will be delivered early next year. Two of the vessels delivered are being used for ferry operations between Singapore and the Indonesian Riau Islands, while another two were delivered to Vietnam to support Sembawang Maritime's ferry operations there.

South Korean students rally as tycoon indicted SEOUL (Reuter): South Korean state prosecutors yesterday issued their first indictment against a business tycoon in a huge corruption scandal involving ex-president Roh Tae-woo. Separately, riot police fired volleys of tear gas to beat back about 1,000 students trying to march on the homes of Roh and his predecessor Chun Doo-Hwan. The students are demanding the two be indicted for their roles in the bloody suppression of a 1980 civil uprising.
