No rabies case in Jakarta

JAKARTA (JP): The City Health Office head, Dr. Aslan Lasman, said yesterday that there are no rabies patients in Jakarta.

The statements were made to The Jakarta Post in reference to a preliminary report saying that more than 4,000 cases of rabies were detected in Jakarta over the last five years.

Aslan said that more than 4,000 people had been bitten by rabies-carrying animals such as dogs, cats and monkeys.

"Those suspected of having caught rabies from bites are injected with anti-rabies serum," Aslan said.

He said rabies is a lethal disease, and proper and prompt treatment must be given to suspected patients.

The city administration and the City Council had a plenary session last week to approve a bill on the control of rabies- carrying animals.

The bill requires all rabies-carrying animals to be vaccinated. (yus)
