Six students go on trial for murder

JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta District Court began trying yesterday six senior high school students for killing another student.

Prosecutor Agus Sutoto said that Nandan Mulyadi, known as Penjor, Abdur Rohman, Jodhy Kresnapati, Muhammad Fahad Mukrom, known as Faad, Hendi Hendarsyah, and Heryansyah attacked Syaefudin Tafsir on Jl. Gaharu in South Jakarta on Sept.9. The boys were fighting with the victim's gang.

The defendants and the victim are all between 16 and 18 years old.

The defendants are students at a state high school in Cilandak, South Jakarta. The victim was a student at a private technical high school in the same area.

Dozens of students packed the court room to watch the trial presided over by Judge Kepler Simandjuntak.

Plan

The prosecutor said that at 9:30 p.m on Sept. 9, Syaefudin and his friends, including Wahyu Hidayat, Arta Pratama and Fajri Fatara went to Jl. Gaharu where the defendants were hanging out.

The victim and his friends planned to ask for Wahyu's bag and hat which were stolen by the gang several days before, he said.

The gang at first ran away, but later came back with more friends to attack Syaefudin's group, Agus said.

Overwhelmed, Syaefudin, Arta, Wahyu and Fajri ran. Syaefudin fell.

Hit

Nandan Mulyadi hit Syaefudin and then stoned him. Heryansyah slapped Syaefudin's face. Jodhy clubbed the victim's head with a steel pipe while Faad and Abdur Rohman kicked him in the stomach, the prosecutor said.

"The victim died in hospital the following day from cerebral hemorrhage," he added.

The defendants violated article 170 and article 351 of the Criminal Code. If found guilty, they face up to seven years in prison.

Police records indicate at least 200 students have been jailed for brawling, torturing others, robbery and vandalism.

City police said that more than 150 crimes, including brawls and holdups, were committed by students between January and October this year. (29)
