Man beaten for stealing car

JAKARTA (JP): A man was beaten by a mob for trying to steal a car in the parking lot of the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital yesterday.

Tawu (35), also known as Oki, was caught by a security guard in the act of trying to break open the door of a jeep owned by a doctor, at noon. The doctor's car was parked in front of the Eijkman Molecular Biology Institute, in the hospital compound.

According to Japar, the security guard, he and several other guards had been watching the suspect, who came with three friends.

"They acted suspiciously, so I followed one of them to make sure they couldn't do any harm," Japar said.

"The man was trying to break open the car door with this T- shape key," he said, giving evidence to the police.

Unconscious, Tawu was yesterday in intensive care. The guards had tied him to the bed to stop him escaping. (05)
