Nyoman to hold solo exhibition here
JAKARTA (JP): Sculptor Nyoman Nuarta will hold his third solo
exhibition at Wisma Seni Nasional, the national fine arts
gallery, between Nov. 28 and Dec. 7.
The exhibition, called Nyoman Nuarta Kalamatra, will feature
39 works sculpted by Nyoman between 1990 and 1995, including 5
Pejabat (Five Officials), 1990; Sliding Through the Waves, 1991;
Reclining, 1993; Transfiguration I, 1994; and Asa and Azab (Hope
and Torment), 1995.
Most of the sculptures to be exhibited take their themes from
nature.
Many art critics consider Nuarta's works commercial items
because the sculptor receives bulk orders from government
agencies and businesses. In this exhibition, Nuarta is seeking to
demonstrate his creativity and originality.
Born in the small town of Tabanan, Bali, in 1951, Nuarta
launched his career in the art world in 1977 while still a
student of the Fine Arts School of the Bandung Institute of
Technology.
After graduating, Nuarta produced a number of large statues,
including Jalesveva Jayamahe in Surabaya, East Java, for the
Indonesian Navy; and Garuda Wisnu Kencana, a project commissioned
jointly by the Bali provincial administration and the Ministry of
Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. (raw)
