Police, squatters clash at dumpsite
MANILA (Reuter): One man was killed yesterday and a Japanese
cameraman seriously injured when squatters clashed with police
trying to evict them from the Smokey Mountain garbage dump in
Manila, hospital workers said.
The man was killed after gunshots erupted as police moved in
to evict the squatters, they said. A Manila radio station also
said one person was killed, but the report could not be
immediately confirmed.
The squatters hurled rocks and improvised missiles shot by
slingshot at the police, who replied with tear gas.
Toshihiko Uriu, a freelance cameraman from Japan's NHK
television, was shot in the stomach while covering the
demolition, police and colleagues of the Japanese said. "He is in
stable condition," a member of NHK's Manila bureau said.
