President to inaugurate new Freeport town JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto is scheduled to inaugurate on Tuesday a new town in Irian Jaya built by the giant American copper and gold mining company PT Freeport Indonesia. Irian Jaya Governor Jacob Pattipi told reporters that the town has been built near the hilltop town of Tembagapura where Freeport conducts its largest mining operation.

The amount constitutes the main portion of the total ODA loans for Indonesia amounting to 187 billion yen pledged by Japan at the fourth conference of the Consultative Group for Indonesia in Paris last July.

Minister Tarmizi Taher discharged from hospital JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher was discharged from the Gatot Subroto Military Hospital yesterday after a ten-day hospitalization. Yusuf Ahmad, the ministry's head of general affairs bureau told The Jakarta Post that the minister was "exhausted" after a number of lengthy overseas and domestic trips. Danone launches venture PARIS (Reuter): French food group Danone officially launched a joint venture yesterday, PT Danone Biscuits Indonesia, which started producing and marketing crackers, wafers and sweet biscuits under the Danone brand in October. Govt to review cellular phone installation rate JAKARTA (JP): The government promised yesterday to review the current tariff for the installation of cellular telephones to promote the use of such telecommunication devices. Director General of Post and Telecommunications Djakaria Purawidjaja said here yesterday that Indonesia aims to increase the number of cellular telephone subscribers from about 200,000 at present to 600,000 by March 1999.

PT Balisani indicted JAKARTA (JP): A State Secretary office staff member has filed a lawsuit against PT Balisani Sentrawisata, a private tour company, for fraud. J. Arthur Manata, the plaintiff, told reporters after reporting the case to the City Police on Thursday that PT Balisani Sentrawisata had cheated him of Rp 10.6 million. Arthur said that the firm had tempted him with beautiful salesgirls to pay Rp 14 million to become a member.
