Houses inundated in Cilacap

CILACAP, Central Java (JP): Some 3,500 houses in 11 villages in the Kawunganten subdistrict, Cilacap regency, have been inundated in flooding since Sunday.

The water level in the flooded areas, which has not shown any signs of dropping, is currently 70 centimeters.

The villages inundated include Grumbul, Bringkeng, Grugu, Bojong, Ramajaya, Ujungalang, Kalimanis, Panikel and Kalijeruk.

Thousands of residents have sought refuge on higher ground and are currently staying in makeshift shelters or in various public buildings, Antara reported.

In addition, floods have destroyed the ready-to-harvest crops on about 220 hectares of rice fields.

A score of villagers have reportedly caught influenza during the flooding.

"How can we stay healthy if we have to stay outdoors day and night, in this cold weather?" one resident asked. "We are also running out of food," he added. (swe)
