Sumatra needs more teachers

PADANG, West Sumatra: A councilor revealed that the province
needs about 9,000 new teachers, even though complaints about
unemployment continue to grow.

Legislator Sjofjan Kahar told Antara on Thursday that many of
the teachers needed are for the subject of religion, while many
graduates of the State Institute for Islamic Studies are
currently unemployed in the province.

He suggested that the provincial office of the Ministry of
Education and Culture hire teachers on a temporary or part-time
basis.

"Limited funds should not be an excuse," he said.

"Unless the problem is promptly addressed, the province will
have difficulty finding good human resources by the year 2020,
when national and international competition accelerates," he
said. (swe)
