Timah plans to buy five mining firms JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed tin mining company PT Timah is trying to buy five ailing mining companies in Indonesia and overseas. PT Timah president director Erry R. Hardjapamekas said yesterday the five firms mined gold, diamonds and coal in Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and several other countries. He refused to name the companies. Erry said negotiations were underway and hoped to sign a deal with at least one of the companies this year.

Wartsila builds genset plant JAKARTA (JP): PT Wartsila Diesel Indonesia has begun building its genset manufacturing plant in the Jababeka Industrial Estate in Bekasi, West Java. The company said yesterday the plant would cost about US$10 million and would produce 500 KW to 6,000 KW gensets. The plant is scheduled to start production late this year and will carry out genset packaging and the assembly of Watsila's engines.

Over 5,000 AIDS cases in Vietnam HANOI (AFP): More than 5,000 cases of HIV-infected people are now registered in Vietnam, a report said yesterday. At least 5,005 people have tested positive for the Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, of which 701 have full blown AIDS and 412 have died, the Nhan Dan newspaper reported. Two thirds of the cases were drug addicts, the newspaper said citing figures from the National Committee for the Prevention of AIDS.

Hyundai set to build $400m car plant in RI SEOUL (AFP): South Korea's largest automaker, Hyundai Motor Co., said yesterday it would build a 400-million-dollar auto joint venture in Indonesia to strengthen its foray into the local market. The new plant to be built jointly with a local conglomerate Bimantara Citra Group, will be capable of producing 50,000 mid- sized passenger cars annually from the first half of 1999, a Hyundai spokesman said.

No repair service I bought a pair of Dr. Martens sandals from a shoe store at the Kelapa Gading Mall. After wearing the sandals for about a month and a half one of the buckles broke. I approached the Dr. Martens store to have it repaired and was told they did not have the facilities to repair the sandals. The shop referred me to the distributor for Dr. Martens Airwair in Indonesia. The distributor suggested I get the sandals repaired at any shoe repair shop or by any traveling cobbler.

Timber theft on the rise KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: A local forestry official has complained that timber theft from the forests of southern Kendari are on the increase and that the forest police are unable to cope. Antara quoted La Ndimasa as saying yesterday that the South Kendari district's 11,000 hectares of hardwood forest are protected by only 30 forest police with three motorcycles.
