Suspect shot to death

JAKARTA (JP): Police arrested three fugitives and shot one of them to death yesterday for killing a man on Feb. 9 on Jl. Sumenep, Central Jakarta.

Central Jakarta Police Precinct Deputy Chief Maj. Bambang Sugiarto said Dedy alias Gondrong, 34, was shot after he resisted arrest.

The shooting took place in a makeshift house on Jl. Palmerah Utara, near Palmerah railway station.

"The suspect tried to shoot the police when they entered the house. However, they later found the suspect had used a toy gun to threaten the officers," Bambang said.

He said the police rushed Dedy to Kramatjati Police Hospital, but was dead on arrival.

The police also arrested two other suspects, identified as Ateng and Purnomo, in the house, he said.

According to Bambang, the police tracked down the men in connection with the killing of a hoodlum, identified as Udin, on Jl. Sumenep.

The three suspects allegedly mobbed Udin.

Neighbors found the body of Udin lying on the ground. There were severe stabs to the face, body and arms. (jun)
