Bosnia and Zimbabwe qualify for semi-finals
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Bosnia Herzegovina and Zimbabwe have qualified for the Dunhill Cup semi-finals after beating Indonesia and Zimbabwe, respectively, in the final Group B matches played here on Wednesday.
Bosnia downed Indonesia 2-0, while Zimbabwe routed Vietnam 6-0 in the two Group B matches.
Today's semi-finals will see Zimbabwe taking on Group A winner China, while Bosnia will meet Malaysia, the second-placed team in Group A.
Earlier Wednesday, Indonesia failed to upset Bosnia, despite having the speed and support of its partisan supporters, mainly made up of Indonesian workers in Malaysia.
Their forwards gave early indication of their intentions by setting up successive raids on the Bosnian goal.
But the Bosnians, shrewdly husbanding their energy in the humidity with heavy ground conditions, absorbed the Indonesian pressure and waited for their opponents to make mistakes.
One such error came in the 29th minute when Indonesian goalkeeper Hendro Kartiko needlessly brought down Bosnian forward Dzelaludin Muhaemovic inside the penalty box. Sanin Pintul made no mistake with the spot kick.
A minute before half-time, Asim Hrnjic put Bosnia further ahead by capitalizing on another Indonesian defensive error to score.
The scoreline stayed unchanged till full-time with Indonesia vainly trying to salvage some pride, while the Bosnians confined themselves to avoiding errors.
Zimbabwe later claimed the second semi-final berth from Group B with a 6-0 routing of Vietnam .
The victory placed Zimbabwe in the second place in Group B and a semi-final match today with China.
Zimbabwe led 3-0 at half-time with two goals from Gilbert Musangazhike and one from Alous Bunjira.
After the break Mushangazhike collected his hat-trick while Bunjira scored his second goal. Claudius Zviripati added his name to the scoresheet with one goal to wrap up the victory for Zimbabwe.
The finals are to be played on March 2.
