Record growth for Visa JAKARTA (JP): Visa International Asia Pacific announced that its 1995 sales volume in Indonesia alone reached US$1.27 billion, up by 28 percent from $998 million in 1994. The company's Indonesia Manager Pauline Sahetapy issued a statement yesterday stating that the 28 percent yearly growth in Indonesia is slightly higher than the 27 percent growth in the Asia Pacific region, which recorded $92.4 billion in sales last year.

British Aerospace to help Malaysia KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): British Aerospace plc (BAe) boosted its presence in Malaysia yesterday when it teamed up with a British university and a Malaysian company to set up a science and engineering university here. BAe, Britain's biggest defense conglomerate, sold 28 Hawk combat aircraft to Malaysia for 2.4 billion ringgit (US$960 million) in 1988 and has also shown an interest in making components locally.

Australia detains Muna fishermen KENDARI, Southeast Sulawesi: The Australian police have arrested 19 fishermen from Maginti island in the Muna regency for illegally entering Australian waters. Southeast Sulawesi Governor La Ode Kaimuddin confirmed the report yesterday, but said he had no idea when the arrest was made. At least 1,000 local fishermen have been arrested by Australia for similar offenses since the 1980s, Antara reported. "We have done a lot to stop them from doing so," La Ode said.

Two RP maids jump off buildings MANILA (AFP): Two Filipina maids are to be repatriated from Saudi Arabia after jumping from their employers' apartments to escape alleged maltreatment, the Philippine labor department said yesterday. Elena Navarro, 21, suffered spinal injuries while Dany Alisa severely injured her lower back and broke her right leg, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) administrator Wilhelm Soriano said here. The incidents occurred separately in February.

WTO agenda setting complicated SINGAPORE (JP): Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, Yeo Cheow Tong, suggested yesterday that rules be established to guide countries in determining which issues are relevant to be discussed at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Yeo told the closing session of the two-day World Trade Congress here that without clear-cut rules, the first ministerial meeting of the WTO here in December might be overloaded with irrelevant issues.

Five arrested on rape charges JAKARTA (JP): The police have arrested five of the seven men who allegedly raped a girl in an empty house in Pejaten Timur, Pasar Minggu district, South Jakarta. South Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Sisno Adiwinoto said the police acted swiftly after receiving a report from the victim, Rita, 18, on Wednesday night. They apprehended five of the seven suspects, all of whom are Metromini bus drivers.

Trials in teacher's family murder ending
Trials in teacher's family murder ending JAKARTA (JP): The trials of the suspected murderers of a teacher's family in East Jakarta last year is coming to an end. One more witness from the police forensic department will appear at the East Jakarta district court next Monday to clarify reports on one of the victim's blood type. On Oct. 2 last year, a housewife and her three children were killed in their home in Bambu Apus.
