Manila buries maid who died in S'pore MANILA (Reuter): Hundreds of Filipinos gathered yesterday to bury a Filipina maid who fell to her death from a Singapore apartment building last month, and her mother rejected an official finding that she might have committed suicide. Angelina Palaming, who plunged to her death from her employer's nine-story apartment block on Dec. 7, was buried in the Tanay district cemetery. Her five-year-old ward, who also fell, landed on her body and survived.

Navy hospital fire contained JAKARTA (JP): A small fire swept the employees' cooperative office at Mintohardjo Navy Hospital, on Jl. Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta, on Friday. An official of the hospital told The Jakarta Post that the fire started at 5:30 a.m., but he did not know the cause. A witness, Is Wahyu Purnomo, said she saw thick smoke coming from the back part of the hospital. She said four fire engines came to the location quickly and extinguished the fire right away.

Student brawls still alarming JAKARTA (JP): Despite the long struggle by police and teachers to curb student brawls in the capital, the number of teenagers killed in clashes last year was 20 percent higher than in 1994. Police data show that at least 12 students and one other person died in a total of 215 brawls recorded in the city last year, while in 1994 10 students were killed in 160 brawls. Last year, a total of 604 students were arrested and 77 of them were jailed for fighting.
