Persebaya tamed in Eindhoven match

JAKARTA (JP): Persebaya Surabaya had to eat a 6-2 (4-1) defeat
at home on Saturday night. But the match was just a friendly, and
a pretty good performance considering the rival: Dutch first
division runner-up PSV Eindhoven.

What's more, Eindhoven fielded its best line-up possible
without injured Brazilian booter Ronaldo.

Attending the rare spectacle were Surabaya's governor Basofi
Sudirman, Surabaya's mayor Sunarto Sumoprawiro and chief of East
Java Military Command Maj. Gen. Imam Utomo, along with 16,000
Persebaya supporters at the Gelora 10 November stadium.

The friendly started with Persebaya's goalie Basuni Alwi
stunned by Wim Jonk, who received a pass from teammate R.
Eykelkamp to score Eindhoven's first goal as the second minute
ticked away.

Three minutes later, cheers exploded when Dodik Suprayogi
fooled Eindhoven's goalie R. Water Reus and nailed the equalizer.

Persebaya's confidence was boosted, inspiring it to wage new
attacks. But Eindhoven soon made its host's blood run cold.

Wim Jonk netted his second goal at the 17th minute. Belgian
player Luc Nillis made it three at the 21st minute through a
penalty shoot-out after Sukabar, who replaced Alwi, fouled
Eykelkamp. B. Zenden's goal at the 43rd minute closed the first
half with a score of 4-1.

In the second half, Eindhoven resumed its fierce play but
added just two goals through Eykelkamp at the 55th minute and
Zenden at the 85th minute.

Persebaya's cold comfort came when its guest player Roger
Milla, the former Cameroon soccer legend, managed to escape the
surveillance of Eindhoven's backs to feed M. Azis with a pass,
which he converted.

Eindhoven left yesterday for Manado, North Sulawesi, to take
on Persma Manado in the Klabat stadium on Wednesday. The match,
in which Ronaldo will be fielded, will mark the end of
Eindhoven's visit in Indonesia.

During its stay in Manado, Eindhoven's coach Dick Advocaat,
former coach to the Dutch national team, is expected to give a
coaching clinic for Indonesian coaches and players. (arf)
