Depiction of Prophet protested JAKARTA (JP): Ten Moslem students staged a peaceful demonstration outside the United States embassy yesterday over what they called "America's intolerance of Islam". The representatives of the Jakarta Moslem Students Forum protested the depiction of Prophet Muhammad in a relief beside the U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. The students gathered for half an hour waving posters condemning the U.S. government.

Soeharto to open Kalimantan bridge JAKARTA: President Soeharto is expected to open an 1,082-meter-long bridge over the Barito River in April so that traffic can flow between South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. Governor Gusti Hassan Aman said after meeting Soeharto here yesterday that the 10.3-meter-wide bridge was 15 meters above the water level at high tide and 18 meters above at low tide. The Rp 98 billion (US$41.8 million) bridge took three years to build.

Tonasa operates new plant JAKARTA (JP): PT Semen Tonasa, the South Sulawesi-based cement factory, will soon operate a cement bagging plant with a capacity of 300,000 tons per year in Palaran, East Kalimantan. "We started constructing the plant early last year and we'll start commercial operation later this month," the company's director for research and development, Agus Mochtar Sagir, told Antara in Samarinda yesterday. He said that the plant would cost about Rp 20 billion (US$8.51 million).

Apparently it is empty promotion, because in reality things are different, especially for the areas surrounding Jakarta. On Feb. 11 I sent out invitations by express mail for an occasion on Feb. 23, other invitations on Feb. 15 by the same mode of dispatch for March 2. I used the services of the South Jakarta main post office.

Hanbo Construction declared bankrupt SEOUL (AFP): The construction arm of South Korea's failed Hanbo Group was officially declared bankrupt yesterday, a major creditor bank said. Korea First Bank deputy director Lee Ha-Jung told AFP that Hanbo Engineering and Construction Co. Ltd. had defaulted for the second time on promissory notes owed to it worth 6.5 billion won (US$7.3 million) by the close of business yesterday.

Twelve dams in critical shape JAKARTA: Twelve of the country's 60 largest dams are in desperate need of repair, Director General for Irrigation Soeparmono said Thursday. "The 12 dams are in critical condition because they are old or because of natural factors such as earthquakes. They need major repairs soon," Soeparmono said after opening a seminar for World Water Day. He said the Jatiluhur dam in Purwakarta, West Java, was among those in disrepair.
