They came with Jakartans returning from their hometowns. The head of the agency, Soemarto, said recently the number of post-Idul Fitri newcomers, an annual trend, was less than last year. "In 1996, there were 368,374 newcomers," he said. This year, the agency recorded 3,059,576 people left Jakarta between Feb. 2 and Feb. 8.

Hyundai, Pertamina sign deal SEOUL (Antara): South Korea's Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. has signed a contract worth US$40 million to transport oil for the Indonesia's state oil company Pertamina, a company spokesman said here yesterday. Hyundai will transport oil products such as gas oil for the state-run company for 10 years, spokesman Kim Hong-in was quoted by UPI as saying. Hyundai will also build a 17,500-ton oil tanker to be used to ship the oil products, due for completion by 1998.

Maleo on track JAKARTA: Indonesian car-buyers will be treated to the launch of yet another "national car" when the long-rumored Maleo goes public in April. The development of the Maleo car has been the pet project of State Minister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie. Bank Bali enters Singapore JAKARTA (JP): Publicly listed Bank Bali has opened a representative office in Singapore as part of its expansion program. Bank Bali vice commissioner Sukanta Tanudjaja said the opening of the branch early this week would facilitate trade and financial activities between Indonesia and Singapore. The bank has 200 branches in Indonesia and has offices in Los Angeles and the Caymand Islands. In Hong Kong, the bank operates through its subsidiary Bali International Finance.
