Foundation focuses on photography
JAKARTA (JP): Located in Jacob Obrechtstraat 26, 1,071 kilometers from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the World Press Photo Foundation's activities are financed by proceeds from annual exhibitions, yearbook royalties and sponsorship by Canon, Eastman Kodak Company and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.
The non-profit organization is also subsidized by the city administration of Amsterdam.
The foundation calls itself an independent platform for international press photography and aims to increase public interest in press photography and to promote the free flow of information worldwide.
The foundation's philosophy underlies the annual World Press Photo contest and is displayed in the corresponding yearbook and exhibition. The prizewinning entries are exhibited every year around the world without any form of censorship.
The nine-member jury from different countries judges the thousands of entries submitted by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from all over the world.
Since 1983, there has also been a jury of children, which separately selects the World Press Photo Children's Award. (bsr)
