Community gives up land
SORONG, Irian Jaya: The residents of Klamono village, Beraur district, have given up 20,000 hectares of common land for a transmigration site, Antara reported yesterday.
The news agency quoted Benyamin Botto Tandipayuk of the local transmigration office as saying the land had been given for free because "people have become more understanding of the aims and targets of the resettlement program."
Of the total land given, only 2,200 hectares have been cleared.
Approximately 14,000 people from densely populated areas have been resettled in Sorong since 1978. (swe)
