KL fumes at Jakarta's plan for costlier maids KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia was yesterday fuming over Jakarta's proposal to raise the minimum required wage of Indonesian maids working overseas, warning it could hire domestic helpers from Thailand instead. Indonesian Labor Minister Abdul Latief was quoted saying Monday that Jakarta planned to fix salaries of Indonesian maids working overseas at a minimum of US$400.

There were only six passengers from Malang and the bus crew took on more passengers in Surabaya. At the beginning a female employee advised all the passengers to check their belongings, and I did and found that everything was all right. But when the bus had just passed Cikampek, I wanted to open my bag and was shocked to find I couldn't because it was glued shut.

Jakarta JAKARTA (JP): The South Jakarta office of the state-owned telecommunications company PT Telkom has announced an increase in revenue to about Rp 254 billion (US$115.4 million) or 104 percent of its target. Chief of the office, Doddy Herdiaman S., said on Monday evening that revenues increased by 55 percent in 1994, from Rp 163 billion in 1993. Doddy said that the office installed 51,734 telephone lines in 1994, as compared to only 16,097 lines in 1993.

RI's plywood prices to rise JAKARTA (JP): Korindo Group, the South Korean trading arm of Indonesia's association of plywood makers, said that it will soon raise the export prices of plywood. "We are planning to increase plywood prices by around US$20 to $30 per cubic meter this year," said Korindo's general manager, Kim Sang-jin, in Bisnis Indonesia yesterday. Export prices of plywood at present range from $370 to $1,200 per cubic meter, he said.

Better life While on holiday here in Jakarta, it is my observation your country is in the process of growing and building itself. Your people work hard and do not depend upon the government for sustenance. The U.S. seems by contrast to be lethargic and too satisfied with its consumer goods and video entertainment. I do not think the U.S. is growing with the same vigor as Indonesia -- in fact we may be slowly moving toward decline in the next couple of generations.
